1930s Terasita Martinez & Juan San Ildefonso Native American Signed Pot RARE
Original ca 1930s San Ildefonso carved pot or vessel, 3 ½ tall with wide shoulder that has 20 circumference and 3 ¼ opening. Buff with carved red designs; signed Terasita & Juan inscribed on base of pot and Santa is written in pencil near two areas of damage on the base. Terasita was a gifted potter, helping her mother Isabel Pena in her early years. In 1933, she married Juan Jose Montoya, and she may have died from complications while delivering their fourth child when she was only 26 years old. Many of Isabel Pena's carved design were done by Terasita, who may have adopted a style similar to Santa Clara Pueblo's pottery. Art galleries remember has as one of the better artists at the San Ildefonso Pueblo, but she is virtually unknown to the modern art enthusiast, and her brief life limits the number of vessels available today. There are small chips around the opening of the pot, a few on the shoulder and red geometrical designs, and several worn scars on the base. We try to give an accurate description of any condition issues, provide photos, and welcome questions. Any yellow and/or white blob in the picture is a reflection of the flash and overhead lights.
