Agapita Tafoya (1904-1959) petite carved redware Native American Santa Clara pot
We are thrilled to offer a small, very old (1950s or maybe even earlier), original carved redware pot, or vase, by Agapita Tafoya. This pot measures a petite 2" high and 2½" in diameter. It is signed on the bottom. Agapita was an active potter in the first half of the twentieth century at a time when pottery was always made in the traditional manner and deviation from tradition was not even considered. This red slipped jar is traditional to Santa Clara style at the time of its completion in the 1940s or 1950s or earlier.

The background of the red-slipped design was over-painted with earth-colored clay and the red slip was stone polished to a fine sheen. This pot is a very deep red color, attesting to its early period pottery. It has some rubbings over the pot, but its bold red color remains over these many years. It shows a few abrasions, but it is not cracked or chipped. Oh, if it could only tell its tales!

Other than the tell-tale rubbings as shown in the photos, there are no cracks, breaks or repairs. Agapita created most of her pottery from the 1930's to the early 1950's. She worked in all styles including polychrome, black-on-black and carved pottery. It is typically her later carved pottery for which she achieved the most recognition.

However, her early polychrome work is spectacular. Please examine the photos closely.
