Jemez Pueblo Pottery, Hand Coiled, Large Vase. Dimensions: 16 1/2 inches Tall, 12 inches Wide and a 6 inch Wide Top. Mary Small, a celebrated potter from Jemez Pueblo, was named the IACA Artist of the Year for 2010 at the Indian Arts & Crafts Association annual Awards Banquet for the Spring Wholesale Market held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 22.

This is a super fantastic hand coiled vase from the master potter, Mary Small. Her pottery creations are well known throughout the pottery collectors world. This vase has a sophisticated design on a beautifully shaped vase.

The white surface areas of the vase have very fine particles of mica that glisten in the light. The pottery is painted with various designs and an excellent scalloped top and opening. Mary's pottery is distinctive and easily recognizable by collectors and those familiar with Jemez Pueblo pottery styles.

It is very difficult to find large pottery from Mary these days. This pottery was made in 2005. In 1976, Mary developed a technique that created a grey glaze that when fired, formed a soft grey matte finish that her pottery is so well known for. Mary boiled down the Rocky Mountain Bee plant and added fine white clay from the San Felipe Pueblo to achieve this soft grey color. Her pottery is highly collectible for its extremely detailed and quite unique, white and grey designs on a light red base color.
