JEMEZ PUEBLO POTTERY BY MARY SMALL. 2010 Indian Arts and Crafts Artist of the Year.

Mary Small is a very talented and collectible artist from the Jemez Pueblo of New Mexico. Her Jemez name is Kal-la-Tee and she learned her skill from her mother, Perfectita Toya, who is a well-known potter herself. She taught her how to make pots from the ground up.

They dug clay from the earth, processed it with fine sand and water and developed natural paints. She taught her how to coil and hand-finish their work. Mary still uses yucca brushes and a tool for smoothing made from a gourd. She still fires her pottery outdoors over cottonwood coals without any mechanical aids to determine temperature or timing. Today she and her husband, Simon, work together.

They use clay from Jemez and San Felipe for pot, slip and adornment. This traditional technique requires additional firing after each application of color. Each piece she makes is unique. In 2002 she was selected Artist of the Year by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association. She is a very busy woman as she has worked as a hospital nutritionist and is a wife and mother.

She says she prays when she does the pottery. She asks the creator to help her form the pottery the way he formed her. She and her husband Simon are talented and wonderful people. We have known them since our children were very young and she always has a smile on her face.

They have participated in wonderful shows in our Gallery because they take time to talk to each customer. She produces museum quality pieces at a very affordable prices.

This piece is approximately 6 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide at the widest part. The diameter of the opening is approximately 2 3/8 inches. It is definitely a collectible piece.. Therefore, we are able to offer this quality piece from a very collectible artist for a very affordable price. Own one of her pieces and you will own a piece of history.
