Native American SAN ILDEFONSO MARIE AND SANTANA ERA POT POTTERY 1940's

This beautiful classic black on black Maria Martinez pot has been the prize of my collection. I believe this pot is one of the pieces of her pottery shown on the ground in the post card photo she did so long ago. Now I wish that I had kept the postcard with the piece.

Maria and her husband Julian revived the artistry of the ancient Native people. Her son, Santana, did the decorating after Julian passed away. Later, she did pots with no decoration at all. I read her story in "Maria, the Potter of San Ildefonso".

I was very thrilled to acquire this piece back in the 1990's. Her sister, Clara, polished and signed her pots, "Marie and Santana". This pot bears that faint signature, visible in a rubbing, and partially visible under UV light. I believe the signature was nearly effaced by one of the artists because traders were horrified that Maria was not doing her own signing.

Later Maria began to do it herself, signing, "Maria", hence, the change in the spelling. It measures about 3 3/4 " wide and 3 7/8" high.

This one would be double or triple boxed. I do my best to provide the highest quality items and represent them.
