Vintage 1930s Native American Indian MARGARET TAFOYA Black Pottery SANTA CLARA. An exceptional work, certainly worthy of further research. This piece comes with a rock-solid certificate of authenticity signed by Margaret Tafoya's famous daughter, potter TONI ROLLER. The certificate is on letterhead from the Toni Roller Pottery Studio & Gallery, and reads. I Toni Roller, of Santa Clara Pueblo, identified a black on black pottery bowl with twisted handles and a painted Avanyu (Water Serpent) design, as pottery made by my mother, Margaret Tafoya, of Santa Clara Pueblo dating to the 1930's or 1940's and that she also painted the Avanyu design herself. Her signature, on the bottom of the bowl, has been worn off. The Avanyu or Water Serpent represents Water and the Serpent body contains symbols of Clouds, Lightening, Rain, Snow, and Winds which bring in the moisture. The bowl measures 9 1/4 in dia. 11 1/2" across the handles, it is 4" high at the handles, and the bowl is shown in the attached photo. This is an early piece, and extremely rare. I was informed by Toni Roller that her father, Alcario, usually painted the black decorations on her mother's pottery, but she is certain that the Avanyu painting on this piece is absolutely the work of her mother, Margaret Tafoya.
That bowl was simply polished black, with no painted decoration. Although the bottom of this piece has worn smooth over the years, the Certificate Of Authenticity from Toni Roller provides absolute certainty that this piece is by her mother, Margaret Tafoya. Displays beautifully, and in original as-found condition, with NO RESTORATION or REPAIRS.
There are no chips, nicks, cracks, or hairlines. The is a water-spot, visible in center of bowl, and noted wear to underside of bowl, as seen in pics. All items are from a smoke-free home. I take extra care in packing, and you will never find inked newspaper touching your new treasures. FREE scheduling, supersized images and templates.
