Here is a nice vintage Native American acoma jar up for offer. The jar is hand made and painted with attractive geometrical shapes.

It measures approximately 3-3/4 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall. The base of the pot is signed M. Juanico was born into the Yellow Corn Clan at Acoma Pueblo in 1939.

She has been an active potter since 1963. She was taught the traditional way of potting by her mother, Delores Aragon, and in turn, Marie taught the art of traditional pottery to her daughter, Delores Aragon. Marie has won many awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, New Mexico State Fair and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial. Her favorite designs are parrots, snowflakes, rainbows and Mimbres-style animals. She exhibits at the Indian Crafts Shop at U. Department of the Interior in Washington, D. And at some very fine galleries in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Marie primarily makes traditional Acoma-style jars, bowls and owls, and decorates them with designs she learned from her mother.

That said, Marie also says her pots often take on shapes of their own as she is coiling them. If a piece comes out in an old style shape, she decorates it in old style designs. If a piece comes out in a more contemporary shape, she innovates her own designs. Her expertise shows in the number of ribbons she has earned from the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market, the New Mexico State Fair and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial.
