Vtg Hopi Indian Pottery Tile Rectangular w. Double Kachina Jean Sahmie
This vintage Hopi pottery tile has been beautifully made by traditional Hopi potter Jean Sahmie. Jean began working with clay in 1972 and was declared to be an "Arizona Living Treasure" in 2014. Taught by her mother and grandmother she has followed their teaching and continued creating pottery in the traditional Hopi way. She is from the village of Hano on First Mesa of the Hopi reservation.
Jean's work can be found in galleries, museums, private collections, colleges and universities in the U. This rectangular Hopi pottery tile measures 7 1/4" by 3 5/8". It shows two kachinas each within a double border which creates the effect of two separate tiles. This tile is in great vintage condition.
On the front, there is a small pit, probably from the outdoor traditional firing. On the back, there is some discoloration from tape that was previously used to display the tile - this area is very smooth with no tape remnant. The tile is signed with Jean's fish symbol and corn symbol.For verification, I've included a photo of the back of a different tile that is signed by Jean with her full name and the fish and corn symbol.
