HISTORIC ZUNI POLYCHROME HEART-LINE DEER & FROG PICTORIAL POTTERY JAR. Four masterful and individualized heart-line deer circling around the body with four stylized three-dimensional frogs to stunning effect. The frog's heads physically lift out from the pot to appear as though they are poised to leap. The Zuni Frog is a symbol of water, a sacred resource which gives life. They are associated with rain and water, and abundance.
Water being a life springing resource fertility is also associated. It was previously referred to as an antelope, the meaning of which was provided by John G. The line running down from the animal's mouth and terminating at its heart may be described as a prayer.
" It is a pictographic invocation to the "spirit of the antelope to incline the hearts of the antelope on earth to put themselves in the way of the Zunis that they may kill them for food.
