Mida Tafoya (b 1931) Santa Clara Pueblo Carved Avanyu Blackware Pottery Olla Jar
A terrific black pottery bowl by Santa Clara Pueblo potter Mida Tafoya, who carved deeply into the clay the avanyu that encircles the outer edge of the piece. It is in good to fair condition based on the firing discoloration behind the mouth of the avanyu, and the spots on the polished surface above the head of it. Otherwise, it is completely free of major defects.
