Native American Jemez Pottery Nativity By Marie Toya

JEMEZ POTTERY NATIVITY BY MARIE TOYA. This wonderfully crafted Nativity was handmade by Jemez Pueblo potter Marie Toya. Marie was born to Casimiro and Mary E. She learned about pottery from her mother and began producing pottery in 1972.

Anita and Judy Toya are her sisters, and her aunts are potters; Fannie Loretto, Alma Concha and Lupe Lucero. Because Marie loves making storytellers, she primarily creates them.

Storytellers represent the passing down of stories orally through Pueblo tradition. Mary - 5 tall x 2 5/8 long x 2 1/ wide. Joseph- 4 5/8 tall x 2 7/8 long x 2 3/8 wide.

Baby Jesus- 1 5/8 tall x 2 3/4 long x 1 5/8 wide. Cow - 2 1/2 tall x 3 /8 long x 2 3/8 wide. Donkey- 3 5/8 tall x 4 3/8 long x 2 5/8 wide. Wall- 6 3/8 tall x 9 1/2 long.

Within the Jemez Pueblo there are many exceptional potters. The work is generally characterized by the buff and red clays used, and the range of styles and subjects. Storyteller, figures, sgrafitto designs, wedding vases, and melon pots are a few of their favorites. Before the arrival of the Spanish, Jemez was known for its traditional black-on-white ware, but production of this type of pottery died out in the early 18th century. There was a revival of Jemez pottery-making in the early 20th century inspired and influenced by Zia pottery designs, but it was not until the 1960s and 70s that a significant number of Jemez potters began producing high-quality work using traditional methods.
