Coiled from red clay, the bowl was smoothed and hand polished, then painted with kiva steps, one of her typical designs, in black, beige and salmon. It's hand signed on the bottom "Frances Salazar Santa Clara". Frances came from a family of noted potters at Santa Clara; her mother was Flora Naranjo, from whom she learned her art, and she was a sister of Barbara Martinez and Glenda Naranjo.

Her daughters Sophie Cata, Yolanda Verde and Elaine Salazar also became potters of note. Frances became an active potter in 1951; she won many awards at the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Art Show, the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum. Her pottery has been featured in Arizona Highways Magazine and the Magazine of the Eight Northern Pueblos.

Measuring 3 1/2 inches tall and about 4 inches wide, this beautiful bowl weighs a little over one pound. It's in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or hairlines. There is minimal wear except on the black paint on one set of steps (shown in our photo). It's a superb piece of Santa Clara redware by a talented Native American potter.
