This pottery is of an owl with a painted feather design, protruding nose, round eyes, winds, tail feathers and ears. The background color of the pottery is white and the painted polychrome colors are black and orange. There is a hole on the lower back of the pottery which is an air hole.

The pottery is of the Acoma Pueblo and is an effigy owl. The pottery is signed on the flat bottom underside with the word Acoma. Owls are considered protection of the home in Native American culture. Owls were believed to be messengers from beyond the grave and owl symbols signified warnings to people who had broken tribal taboos.

Holy men and holy women among many tribes frequently sought out the spiritual help from real owls for their healing practices.
