Prehistoric Casas Funnel, c. 1100AD, Made From Top of Broken Olla, Anasazi

1100AD Funnel measuring 10 wide, fabricated from the upper part of a broken olla. These people recognized the utilitarian nature of a broken olla thus grinding down the broken edges creating a funnel. Rarely seen, there are though examples from other southwest cultures c. The ground edge has a significant hand patina that occurs from the wear by use over time.

Most importantly this piece has numerous deposit of manganese dendrites - it takes several hundred years for these crystals to form and those present on the ground portion of the piece prove without a doubt that the fabrication took place during prehistoric time. Examples of these funnels are rare and most major collections of Southwestern ceramics do not contain even one example. I have, for 20 years, been a noted collector and later a respected dealer in prehistoric Native American pottery and artifacts.
