Tina Diaz Native American Pottery Master Potter
I had it briefly displayed in a closed glass curio and then stored away for about 20 years in a smoke free home. The dimensions are approximately 4.75" in height and 4.5" in diameter. Tina Diaz has skillfully created her own unique style of carving pottery.

This piece is intricately carved with elaborate designs. There are various sections which create swirls and angles. It is always technically difficult to carve such sharp angles and delicate edges into the clay. The background has the traditional cream colored slip, which few potters use today because it is difficult to apply.

Tina Diaz is also one of only a handful of Santa Clara potters who has mastered the technique of polishing her pottery tan. The tan is the natural color of the clay and the most difficult to polish to achieve a high shine. Tina is a daughter of noted potter Mary Cain, a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo, a well-respected potter specializing in traditional carved black and redware. Christina Naranjo was the daughter of Sarafina & Geronimo Tafoya, and the sister to Margaret Tafoya, Camilio Tafoya and the mother of Teresita Naranjo, Mary Cain and Mida Tafoya; grand daughters Tina Diaz, Linda Cain, sons Billy Cain and Doug Cain; and great-granddaughters Tammy Garcia and Autumn Borts-Medlock all of whom are outstanding master potters.
