Vintage Hopi Indian Pottery Tile Pueblo Bird Aas ku Mana Gwen Setalla
This vintage Hopi pottery tile has been beautifully made by master Hopi potter Gwen Setalla or Aas-Ku-Mana. Gwen is a listed artist in "Hopi-Tewa Pottery" by Gregory Schaaf and has 2 1/2 pages devoted to her work and biography.

Gwen is known for her exceptionally fine and thin pottery as well as her intricate designs. This tile measures 5 5/8" tall by 3 7/8" across.

It has been nicely etched signed on the back. There is some discoloration on the back where there was probably some tape used for hanging. Overall, this tile is in excellent vintage condition. Gwen Setalla was born into the Hopi reservation and is a member of the Bear Clan and the Water Clan. Her mother, Pauline Setalla, shared with her the fundamentals of working with clay using ancient traditions.

When working with clay, Gwen is always reminded of what her parents taught her as a child, "when creating a pot, you bring it to life and you breathe life into it, always treat it with the greatest respect". She prays a silent prayer for every pot she creates and thanks all the great spirits for blessing her with this talent.

She signs her pottery: Aas-Ku-Mana, Hopi, followed by a Bear Paw to denote her clan origins. Gwen is related to Joy "Frogwoman" Navasie (aunt), Eunice Navasie. We guarantee all of our Native American Indian items to be AUTHENTIC American Indian traditional arts.
